Evangelia (Evelyn) Deskas, LL.B.

Evelyn was born in the United States, in the city of New York. During her early childhood she was raised in the Greek neighborhood of Astoria. When she was only five years old her parents settled in Canada, in the French-speaking province of Quebec, city of Montreal where she was raised and educated. Upon completing her law studies she was employed by a highly-respected Montreal law firm specializing in Commercial Law, Corporate Law, Family Law, Fiscal Law and Litigation. She was very active in the Hellenic Community of Greater Montreal as a volunteer, spokesperson for human rights and lawyer. She is also a former Quebec Gymnast with many achievements and distinctions throughout the years as a provincial championship-level athlete in artistic gymnastics and a former Certified Gymnastics Coach having developed acquaintances and friendships with renowned athletes such as former Olympic champions Nadia Comaneci and Bart Conner. She served as one of the founding members of the Olympic Hall of Fame Committee at the Hellenic Community of Greater Montreal and worked as a certified judge at local artistic gymnastics competitions across Quebec. During the historic Charlottetown Accord referendum campaign she was called upon to act as a spokesperson for constitutional reform in the nation-wide televised campaign advertisements in company with the then Canadian Ambassador to the United Nations Yves Fortier and the Dean of McGill University, at the time, Alex Paterson. Throughout her academic career she served on a number of student and community councils.

Evelyn obtained a Bachelor of Arts from McGill University in Montreal, graduating with distinction (Honours) as a Political Science Major. She specialized in the fields of Foreign Policy, Deterrence & Arms Control and Political Communication. She also obtained a Bachelor of Laws (LL.B.) from the renowned French-language university institution Université de Montréal, graduating with distinction as the only recipient of the academic award Frank Scott Prize for Excellence in Constitutional Law and achieving the highest grade in her moot court litigation training before Montreal Superior Court Justice François Rolland. She was admitted to the Quebec Bar in 1998, upon completing her courses and examinations at the École du Barreau. In Greece, she obtained Equivalency from the NARIC (National Academic Recognition Information Center – the official public authority of the Hellenic State for the recognition of foreign academic diplomas) for her Bachelor of Laws (LL.B.) subsequent to passing a sequence of compulsory oral and written examinations in Greek Law at the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens (EKPA) School of Law specifically in the fields of Civil Law, Civil Procedure, Constitutional Law, European Community Law, Penal Law and Penal Procedure. Evelyn is fluent in Greek, English and French with basic knowledge in Italian and Spanish.

Evelyn has been a member of the Quebec Bar Association since 1998. She was also admitted to the Athens Bar Association in Athens, Greece, in 2009 and served as a member until 2014.

Evelyn is a legal professional with international experience, endowed with excellent oral and written communication skills in three languages and an innate ability for accurately diagnosing legal complexities, developing legal argumentation and strategy, mastery in negotiation and carrying out mandates with remarkable craftsmanship. As a Canadian and Quebec attorney, she has mastered the law profession and acquired expertise in the areas of Estate Law, Commercial Law, Corporate Law, Family Law, Immigration Law, Fiscal Law and Litigation. As a Hellenic attorney her experience includes acting as Counsel to the Hellenic Parliament, representing Hellenic citizens residing abroad and in Greece before the Greek court system and authorities in the areas of Commercial, Estate, Family, Fiscal, Immigration and Real Estate Law and acting as legal counsel to the Association of Greek Former Members of the Hellenic and European Parliament. She has also taken on mandates in relation to the Convention for the Protection of Human Rights and Fundamental Freedoms (ECHR), preparing cases for the European Court of Human Rights as well as child abduction cases governed by the Hague Convention on the Civil Aspects of International Child Abduction. She has collaborated with the National Commission for Human Rights in Greece and has been an advocate of human rights throughout her law career.
